Guitar legend Kim Simmonds continues to play solo and band concerts throughout the world in celebration of 40 years on the road for a legendary band that continues to bring great music around the world. Kim has performed solo shows recently in select North American cities, throughout the UK, Spain and Australia.
In 1961, at 13 years old, Kim secretly bought himself a cheap mail order guitar that arrived unassembled. He taught himself to play rock, jazz and blues music by listening to the great blues and rock 'n' roll records of the day that his elder brother Harry had brought him up on. Kim Simmonds formed Savoy Brown in London in 1965, several years after his father relocated the family from the coal mining town of Newbridge, Wales.
In October of 1965, Simmonds and harp player John O'Leary were offered to rent the upstairs room at the Nags Head in Battersea, London. While locals enjoyed their pints downstairs, Savoy Brown began to form their sound, greatly influenced by Chicago blues bands, including greats like Muddy Waters. After a few months, the upstairs room became Kilroy's which was a fixture on the early blues scene in London. By early 1966, The Nags Head became a live music venue because the playing practicing upstairs was filling the pub with listener's downstairs!
Savoy Brown was one of the very first British blues band to record, in 1966. As one of the first racially mixed blues bands, Savoy Brown has had a storied roster of musicians including 3 of the 4 original Foghat members, as well as members of Fleetwood Mac, Robert Cray, U.F.O, Black Sabbath and many others.
Savoy Brown was John Lee Hooker's backing band for his 1967 tour. Simmonds has always loved the blues, and the band's success and his singular guitar skills brought him to jam with everyone from Charles Brown and Earl Hooker to Jimi Hendrix. Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker formed Cream and headlined their very first show in London with Savoy Brown supporting in 1967.
Kim began to focus on the United States and built a huge audience here. Superstar acts including KISS, AC/DC and Jethro Tull have been opening acts for Savoy Brown over the course of an historic and storied career.
With 33 releases to date, 3 of which are solo albums, two separate recording projects in pre-production and upcoming tours in Europe, South America and throughout North America, Kim Simmonds is in top form and promises more great music for years to come.
